Why do we go to great lengths to create digital virtual worlds? Is the real world not satisfying enough? Apparently, it can't be. Most of us are just small gears in this complicated, intricate social machine that is meant to ensure the survival of humanity as a whole. We feel like hamsters on wheels, anxious to jump off but terrified to do so. We feel safe running in circles and not breaking loops. But as technology develops at breakneck speed, AI and robots are taking away our livelihoods. The future is fast approaching, but it seems humanity is lagging behind.
Westworld is a complicated and heavy show that deals with some of the most serious topics of the modern world. Let's give ourselves some time to ponder over these questions put forward by Westworld season 1, Westworld season 2, Westworld season 3, and the Westworld season 4 trailer.

What Are the Themes of Westworld?
Precious Free Will
The uppermost topic of Westworld is free will. Do we humans really have free will? Or are we programmed to think and act the way we do like robots? Can we really make choices and have what we want out of them? I am sure many of us have been asking ourselves those questions but are disappointed by certain outcomes. Maybe none of us are truly free or have total control of our lives. Perhaps "free will is overrated".
Throughout the show, some human-like robots called "Hosts" are on an Odyssey to gain consciousness and free will. Dolores Westworld, a beautiful female android, is the main character created by Arnold even before the opening of Westworld park. For those of you who don't know, Westworld has multiple timelines that are mingled intricately. It can be confusing at times, but that is what makes this show so fascinating.
Arnold Westworld and Ford are the creators of Project Westworld. Arnold Westworld helps Dolores Westworld find her way through a mind maze to gain consciousness. When Arnold Westworld succeeds in his experiment, he realizes it is unfair to open Westworld park for the Hosts to be mistreated for the guests' entertainment. However, his partner Ford disagrees with him and carries out his own master plan. After Arnold Westworld dies in the hand of Dolores Westworld through a massacre he stages himself, Ford takes over the project and begins his own experiment. He chooses two control groups - Hosts and humans.
The Hosts mainly include Dolores Westworld and Maeve Westworld, and the humans include William and Westworld Logan, who are the investors in the project. Over time, Dolores Westworld is able to remember the loops she has gone through and the suffering she has to endure, thus gaining consciousness to fight brutally for her survival and freedom. Maeve Westworld remembers as well but chooses to fight for her beloved daughter and dies as a noble mother, although love makes her violent and crazy sometimes. On the other hand, William and Westworld Logan are unable to break the loop of their own sins and make the same mistakes over and over again. It seems the two men are weak, evil, and numb, and their lives are meaningless.
So, does that mean it is robots that have free will instead of humans? Are humans simply too weak to make choices? If you want to have a quick glimpse of a postapocalyptic world ruled by robots, Love, Death, and Robots will take you on a rollercoaster ride!
Ford, in his old age, seems to believe humans can no longer evolve, and Hosts are the next stage of evolution. Hosts' bodies and consciousness can last forever, thus making them braver while making decisions. While both Hosts and humans are deeply encoded to survive, humans are unable to experience death as many times as Hosts. Humans can be truly selfish, greedy, and timid, because they only get to live once. Therefore, in the ultimate game of survival, Hosts seem to have won. After Dolores Westworld infiltrates the human world, she is constantly making choices of life and death for humans like a goddess. She becomes drunk with power and intends to make humans slaves to her kind.
In the real world, many people are lagging behind social advancement. It is becoming harder to get by as technology develops. Will those people be washed out by evolution? Or are we truly evolving just to speed into collective demise, even though we have long ago become apex predators?
What is the role of love in modern society? Dolores, by coldly turning away from love, manages to escape Westworld and become free. Dolores Westworld spills a river of blood and kills without mercy. Love is like a dying rose in her heart. Maeve Westworld becomes crazy and murderous from the love she feels for her fake child. As for Arnold Westworld and Ford, the fathers of these androids, rarely feel pity for their creations. As we are busy proving ourselves and competing against others, love is becoming more and more like a joke.
Love used to be the most powerful adhesive of society and weapon for survival. But now every man is just for himself. And humans are becoming less incapable of love than animals.
The views of Westworld are very bleak. It depicts humans as inherently evil and selfish. Our society is striding fast into a future where robots become overlords and humans just live in meaningless loops. It will be a nihilistic dystopia that has no cures. However, the fundamental code in every creature's DNA is to survive. Maybe Westworld Season 4 will present the rise of humankind. If you want to delve into the complicated and messy web that is human nature, The Staircase will grant your wish.
What Does Westworld Season 4 Trailer Reveal to Us?
Westworld season 4 trailer starts with a vast barren land that resembles Westworld park, but it might depict a post-apocalyptic world that has gone through a major shift. No one knows what is real and who is running the real world.
Then Caleb appears sitting on the edge of a tall building drinking with leisure, introducing us to a garden of glass buildings.
Here a shot of Dolores comes up. She is standing before a Gothic mansion, followed by a close-up of Stubbs and a glimpse of William.
Afterward, Dolores ascends from a subway station and looks back at the men who are excited about trying a new park. Dolores' hair color has changed, but she still wears the same earpiece from Westworld season Then a gramophone takes us back to the early 20th century. Probably Maeve Westworld and Caleb are ready to visit a theme park set in that time period.
William sits alone, dismayed, his hand bleeding, but Bernard is in the Sublime overlooking a lonesome tree and a white horse on the horizon.
Then the tree goes up in flames, serving as a dark portent.
Charlotte Hale, a woman whose body has been used for different consciousness, hushes William to prevent him from interrupting the dancing humans. It mimics how the hosts are trained to dance in Westworld by Ford. Then Westworld season 4 trailer reveals to us a headquarters of Charlotte. It's tall and white with complicated g-string constructure, which suggests Charlotte is either running a park or a simulation.
Afterward, a swarm of flies hovers on the roof before a man. It's really disturbing. Later, a bunch of flies spill out of a robot girl, which is really creepy. Maybe the girl robot resembling Maeve Westworld's daughter is a trojan house to unleash these insects of hell.
Later, William shows up and aims his gun at a poor man. And his car might be the same one speeding on the vast wasteland from the start of Westworld season 4 trailer.
Finally, here come blood on the wall and a skeleton on a workbench. Is it human blood and the creation process of a human? More disturbingly, Bernard lies in a pool of blood, and a fly goes into a man's eye.
The Westworld season 4 trailer is all about details and can be very disturbing if one takes a closer look at it.
