HBO Max does not offer a Mac app with its official download feature. You can stream in a supported Mac browser, but the website does not save episodes for offline viewing.

Use mobile downloads when a phone or tablet is enough. For an HBO Max MP4 download on your computer, the desktop method below creates a separate file for a compatible Mac player or external storage.

Official Mobile Downloads in Four Steps

The official app is the simpler option for mobile viewing. The following steps use the U.S. plans; plan names and availability can differ by region.

1. Sign in with a Standard or Premium plan on a supported iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet, or Amazon Fire tablet.
2. Open a movie or episode with a Download icon.
3. Tap the icon and wait for the download to finish.
4. Find the title in Downloads and play it when you are ready to watch offline.

HBO Max stores these downloads in the mobile device's internal storage. They are not ordinary video files that you can copy to a Mac or external drive.

As of September 2026, U.S. monthly prices are $10.99 for Basic with Ads, $18.49 for Standard, and $22.99 for Premium, before applicable taxes. Basic with Ads has no official downloads; Standard allows up to 30 and Premium up to 100.

Current U.S. Plan Eligibility

The download allowance is shared across the account's mobile devices and counts titles stored at one time, not daily downloads. Both eligible plans allow no more than 30 downloaded movies; some series have a 25-episode limit across those devices.

A larger allowance does not add Mac downloads or make every title downloadable. The comparison below separates the official feature from the desktop option.

Title, Storage, and Viewing Periods

Unplayed official downloads expire after 30 days, or earlier if the title leaves HBO Max. Starting playback gives you 48 hours to finish. Keep the app signed in for offline use.

For an expired title, reconnect, open Downloads, select its expired icon, and choose Renew Download before deleting it. Renewal requires the title to remain available in your location.

If a Download icon is missing, check the plan, device, and title eligibility. If the icon appears but the download fails, check storage, the connection, and any limit message instead.

Mac Downloads as MP4 or MKV Files

Missing Button or Unavailable Title

For the official app, confirm the plan and device first, then compare another title. If the button is present but a download fails, read the error before deleting anything: storage, account capacity, and title availability are different issues.
