Is this familiar? You’re 45 minutes into the season finale of Yellowstone. The tension is building, someone’s about to get their comeuppance at the train station, you're on the edge of your seat… and freeze. Black screen. That little spinning wheel of doom.

You're not alone. As a media analyst, I've spent more time than I’d like to admit yelling at my LG TV. I've dug through countless forums, tested every "fix" in the book, and finally figured out what’s really going on. Why does Paramount Plus keep crashing or buffering all the time?

Don't worry, I've fixed this problem after hours of testing (not completely, but definitely better.) And here are the reasons I collected and all the solutions I tried. Hope this post can help you solve the buffering or crashing problem.

Quick Guide:

Q1: Why does Paramount Plus keep freezing? ➡️ Check details in Section 1

A1: On Paramount Plus, the reasons can be a corrupted app cache, internet connection issues, outdated app or device software, freezing ads, or server-side problems.

Q2: How do I fix Paramount Plus freezing? ➡️ Check details in Section 2

A2: Common solutions can be a full restart of your device, clearing the app cache, or updating the app. Or try the advanced fix to subscribe via Amazon Prime Video or directly download Paramount Plus for unlimited offline viewing on PC.

Common Culprits: Why Does Paramount Plus Keep Crashing?

Before we jump into the "how-to," let's play detective. Why is this happening in the first place? Is the problem with Paramount Plus DRM or just an app glitch? After spending way too much time staring at loading screens, I’ve narrowed the culprits down to these six usual suspects.

Reason 1: Corrupted App Cache and Data

This is the most common and boring technical reason, so let's get it out of the way. Think of "cache" as your app's short-term memory. It saves little files (like logos or menu layouts) to help the app load faster.

The problem? Sometimes this memory gets scrambled or "corrupted." When the app tries to read this bad data, it throws a digital tantrum and... freezes. It’s like trying to read a recipe with half the steps smudged out.

app cache

Reason 2: The "Ad Break Glitch"

If you've shouted, "Why does Paramount Plus keep freezing on ads?!" at your screen, congratulations, you've found the app's secret boss level of frustration. This is a massive issue, especially for users on the "Essential" (with ads) plan.

This appears to be a flaw in the app's software. It struggles with the handoff from the show to the ad-pod and back to the show. The stream breaks, and the app doesn't know how to recover, leaving you stuck on a black screen or an endlessly looping commercial.

Reason 3: Poor App Optimization for Your Device

This is the answer to the all-important question: "But why does Netflix/Hulu/Max work perfectly fine on the same TV?"

You're right, it's not the TV; it's the app on the TV. An app isn't a "one-size-fits-all" product. The Paramount+ app for a Roku is different from the app for an LG Smart TV (a frequent offender, based on user complaints), which is different from the one for a Fire TV Stick.

Sadly, the Paramount+ app seems poorly optimized for many devices, especially the built-in "smart" functions of TVs. Their processors just can't handle the buggy app as well as a more powerful, dedicated streaming device (like an Apple TV) can.

Note: Read how to get Paramount Plus on TV to learn more details, including how to watch Paramount Plus shows offline on TV easily.

Reason 4: Slow or Unstable Internet

I know, I know. It's the first thing customer support blames. And while a slow connection can cause buffering, it doesn't usually cause a hard crash.

However, Paramount+ seems way more sensitive to tiny dips in connection speed than other services. Netflix is famously robust; it can gracefully lower the video quality for a few seconds to avoid a buffer. Paramount+, on the other hand, seems to hit a small bump in the Wi-Fi signal and just gives up entirely.

Paramount+ is also sensitive to VPN, which also affects the stability of your internet.

Reason 5: Outdated App or Device Software

This one is simple: technology moves fast. The developers at Paramount are (hopefully) releasing updates to fix these bugs. If your app is six months old, you're six months behind on critical patches. The same goes for your device's operating system (like the Roku OS or FireOS). An old system and a new app can lead to conflicts.

Reason 6: Paramount+ Server Outages

Finally, sometimes the problem isn't in your house at all. On a big premiere night (like a new Star Trek: Discovery episode) or during a major live sports event, the Paramount+ servers can get overloaded and go down.

Everyone experiences the freeze at the same time. You can usually confirm this by checking a site like DownDetector.

How to Fix Paramount Plus Freezing: 8 Solutions from Basic to Advanced

Alright, let's  get that stream running smoothly. Work your way down this list—I'm willing to bet one of the first three will solve it. But if not, don't worry, we've got advanced options.

Solution 1: The "1-Minute Fix"

Don't roll your eyes! I know it's the "tech support 101" answer, but it works 80% of the time. A "soft" restart (like turning your TV off and on with the remote) often isn't enough. You need to do a "hard" power cycle.

  1. Exit the Paramount+ app and close it completely.
  2. Turn off your device (your Smart TV, Roku, Firestick, etc.).
  3. Unplug your device from the wall outlet. Yes, really.
  4. Unplug your Wi-Fi router at the same time.
  5. Wait 60 seconds. Let all the temporary memory clear out.
  6. Plug your router back in and wait for it to fully connect.
  7. Plug your device back in and turn it on.
  8. Relaunch the Paramount+ app and see if the issue is resolved.

This process clears any temporary cache on both your device and router and fixes a multitude of sins.

Solution 2: Clear Your Paramount+ Cache & Data

If a restart didn't work, the app's cache is our next target (see Culprit 1). This is where corrupted files hide. The process is different for every device, so here’s a quick guide. The method to clear the Paramount+ cache depends on your device:

1. On Firestick/Fire TV: Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Paramount+ > Clear Cache (and Clear Data if that doesn't work).

2. On Roku: Roku doesn't let you clear the cache for a single channel. You must uninstall the channel (Paramount+) > Restart the Roku (from Settings > System > Power > System restart) > Reinstall the channel.

clear cache

3. On Smart TVs (LG, Samsung, etc.): This is trickier. Most TVs require you to uninstall and reinstall the app. On some LG TVs, you can turn off the TV, then hold the power button on the remote for 30 seconds to clear its memory.

4. On Web Browsers: Go to your browser's settings and clear the cache and cookies for paramountplus.com.

clear browser cache

Solution 3: Update Your App and Device Firmware

This is simple hygiene. If your app is out of date, you're missing the latest bug fixes. Go to your device's app store (on Roku, Firestick, etc.) and manually check for an update to the Paramount+ app. Even more important: update your device's system.

  • On Roku: Settings > System > System update > Check now
  • On Firestick: Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for Updates
  • On LG Smart TV: Settings > All Settings > Support > Software Update > Check for Updates

Solution 4: Check Your Ad Blocker or VPN

Paramount+ hates ad blockers and VPNs. If you're using the ad-supported plan, your ad blocker is probably fighting with the app's stream, causing it to crash (especially during ad breaks). Disable any ad blockers or network-wide Pi-holes and try again.

Similarly, Paramount+ is geo-restricted, so if you're using a VPN, the service will actively try to block you, leading to freezing and errors.

Solution 5: The "IPv6 Trick" for LG Smart TV Users

This is an advanced, specific fix, but I've seen it work miracles for fellow LG TV owners on Reddit. Many smart devices struggle with modern network protocols.

  1. Go to your LG TV's Settings.
  2. Navigate to Network > Wired Connection (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi Connection.
  3. Find the Advanced settings.
  4. Look for an option labeled "IPv6" and turn it ON (or "Enable").
  5. Restart your TV.

This has reportedly fixed buffering and freezing issues on Paramount Plus for many users when nothing else would.

Ultimate Solutions: The "Permanent Fixes"

So, you’ve done everything right. You’ve power-cycled, cache-cleared, and updated, but Paramount+ is still freezing on you, especially during those cursed ad breaks.

paramount mood loop

This is the point where most people give up and cancel. But before you do, there are two "nuclear options" that the online tech communities have found to work consistently.

Advanced Fix 1: Download Paramount Plus Videos to Avoid Any App Issues

The only true way to guarantee a 100% buffer-free, freeze-free, and ad-crash-free experience is to remove the internet from the equation entirely. How? By watching Paramount Plus offline.

While the Paramount+ app does impose many download limits. The files are trapped in the app, expire after 30 days, and you can't transfer them. This is where a dedicated tool becomes a game-changer. It can help you watch Paramount Plus offline on TV and any devices, and what's most important, help you play Paramount content without accessing the official app/site full of troubles.

Method 1: Use KeepStreams for Paramount Plus-1

Here’s why KeepStreams for Paramount Plus is the ultimate fix for the freezing problem:

1. Eliminates Buffering: Once downloaded, the file plays from your hard drive. No internet? No problem.

2. Skips Ad Glitches: The software downloads the content without the ad breaks, so the "ad break glitch" (our Culprit 2) becomes impossible.

3. Total Portability: You get a simple MP4 file. You can put it on your laptop, a USB drive to plug into your TV, or your tablet for a road trip. The files never expire.

It's a simple idea: instead of streaming the show from a buggy app, you own the file. You're no longer at the mercy of your internet speed or Paramount's faulty ad-insertion tech. It’s how I finally watched the Halo series finale without a single interruption.

Here's how to use KeepStreams:

  1. Install KeepStreams from its official site.
  2. Launch the program and find Paramount+ from the "VIP Services". Click it.
  3. Log in to your Paramount+ account and play the videos you want to download.
  4. Set download options in the following window.
  5. Click "Download Now", and enjoy the Paramount+ videos without buffering or crashing.

download paramount plus video

!
It's acceptable to make personal copies of videos you have the right to play. But you should never share, distribute, or sell the downloads, which is a violation of the law and also Paramount+'s ToS.

Advanced Fix 2: Subscribe via Amazon Prime Video Channels

This might sound strange, but it’s the most common and effective workaround I’ve seen.

All you need to do is cancel your direct Paramount+ subscription. Then, re-subscribe through Amazon Prime Video Channels.

You still get the exact same content (with or without ads, depending on your plan), but you will be watching it inside the Amazon Prime Video app instead of the notoriously buggy Paramount+ app.

This method might work because Amazon has poured millions into its streaming infrastructure. Their app is more stable, better optimized across all devices (yes, even LG Smart TVs!), and handles ad-insertion flawlessly. You're simply swapping a buggy app for a rock-solid one. Many users report a night-and-day difference, with zero freezing or crashing.

FAQs

Q1. Why does Paramount Plus keep freezing on my Smart TV (LG, Samsung, Vizio)?

A1. This is almost always due to poor app optimization. The built-in processors on many smart TVs are just not very powerful. The buggy, resource-hungry Paramount+ app overloads them, leading to freezes and crashes.

Your best bets are to clear the cache (Solution 2), check for TV software updates (Solution 3), or bypass the TV's app entirely by using our "Permanent Fixes" (subscribing via Prime Video or using an external tool to download Paramount Plus for offline viewing).

Q2. Why does Paramount Plus keep crashing on Roku / Firestick?

A2. A crash (where the app closes and returns to the home screen) is often caused by a "memory leak" or a critical error from a corrupted cache. Your first step should always be clearing the cache on your Fire TV Stick or reinstalling the channel on your Roku (which is the only way to clear its cache).

Q3. Why does Paramount Plus always freeze during commercials?

A3. "Ad Break Glitch" is a software flaw in the app. The app struggles to transition from the show's stream to the ad server's stream and back again. Any slight delay or mismatch in this handshake causes the app to lock up.

This is a problem Paramount needs to fix. You can't directly "fix" it, which is why I so strongly recommend the permanent solutions: either watch it in the more stable Prime Video app or download the content with a tool like KeepStreams for Paramount Plus to remove the ad breaks entirely.

Q4. Is it my internet, or is the Paramount+ app just bad?

A4. Let me be clear: If Netflix, Hulu, and Max all work fine, it is almost certainly not your internet. The Paramount+ app is just notoriously buggy and far more sensitive to tiny internet fluctuations than other, better-built streaming apps. You're not imagining it, and it's not your fault.

Wrapping Up

I know how incredibly frustrating it is when you just want to relax and watch a show, but the technology fails you. Dealing with why Paramount Plus keeps freezing can feel like a losing battle.

We've walked through the whole process, from identifying the culprits (like that awful ad glitch) to trying the basic fixes (like power-cycling and clearing the cache). This post also covered the advanced, community-proven tricks, like subscribing via Amazon Prime or simply taking the internet out of the equation with KeepStreams.

The bottom line is that while why does Paramount Plus keep crashing is a common search, you don't have to live with it. Whether you choose a simple fix or an advanced one, you can take back control of your movie night.
