[KeepStream Review] Is It Worth Trying? Safety, Legality, User Comment

For digital archivists and media hoarders like us, the current software market is overcrowded and confusing. Every other week, a new tool pops up promising to be the "ultimate" solution for saving streams from Netflix, Disney+, or Amazon Prime.

KeepStreams is one of the most visible names in this space right now, but user opinions are incredibly polarized. A quick glance at Trustpilot or Reddit reveals a mixed bag: some users recommend it for building their offline Plex libraries, while others complain about billing issues or "analysis failed" errors.

So, what is the reality? Is KeepStreams a reliable tool, or is it just another buggy piece of software wrapped in good marketing? I will cut through the noise in this post. And make a detailed review of its functions, user feedback, safety and legality, alternatives, and other points we all care about.

What is KeepStreams One? Basic Information

KeepStreams is not just another "YouTube Converter". After using it for three weeks straight, I'd describe it more as a Personal Media Library Builder. Unlike screen recorders (like OBS or Audials) that literally record your screen (can't use the computer while it's working), KeepStreams downloads the actual video source file directly from the server.

It definitely can't be called "a cheap tool". The high price must come with outstanding features. That's what I thought before testing. And the truth is, it's right. Here are the functions I found when using KeepStreams (version 1288):

KeepStreams claims to download videos in their original quality up to 4K. Based on my usage, the 4K quality seems to be available for several services now, such as Disney+, HBO Max, Apple TV, and Hulu. But at least I can always get the 720p or 1080p videos. For data hoarding, it's enough for me.

Honestly, KeepStreams is one of the few tools that can really download Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. I can't tell you how wonderful when I enjoy these downloaded films without buffering in my home theatre. Although this function is also service-specific, I can get Dolby quality from Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, and Apple TV.

In my test, KeepStreams uses multiple video codecs. Except for Dolby Vision, there are also H264, H265, and HDR10.

This is the most important feature for data hoarders. KeepStreams can save videos into MP4 or MKV video files, so that they'll be free from DRM and other limits. The exact format can be customized from the settings.

Different from traditional recorders or downloaders, KeepStreams is able to detect commercials during the download and automatically remove them from the downloaded files. It's a good chance to enjoy an ad-free offline viewing experience at a lower cost of subscription to various streaming services.

In the download settings window, we can choose to extract subtitles into separate SRT files or remux them into the video. The default setting can always be changed from the system settings. Of course, the language of subtitles and audio can be selected, as long as the original video provides.

Recently, KeepStreams added a specific service for Crunchyroll to download ASS subtitles.

With one click, we can save a whole season of TV shows from Netflix or anime from Crunchyroll. It's quite convenient for saving multi-season classics. It even has an Auto-Download mode that detects and downloads new episodes automatically at your scheduled time. A must-have for users keeping up with the latest releases.

Of course, KeepStreams can save complete metadata, including movie titles, cast, cover art, and plot summaries. This makes managing our media library easier with Plex.

Is KeepStreams Safe and Legal to Use?

When software promises to download "DRM-protected content", it naturally raises red flags. I've broken this down into two critical parts: the technical safety of your device and the legal safety of you, the user.

Is It a Virus?

There were rumors floating around forums that KeepStreams might be "bloatware" or carry hidden miners. To verify this, I ran the latest KeepStreams_Installer.exe (v.1.2.8.8) through VirusTotal and performed a deep scan with Norton 360.

• Result: 0/98 Detections. Clean.
• The "False Positive" Issue: Occasionally, Windows Defender might flag it simply because it's a "downloader tool." This is common for this category of software (similar to how torrent clients get flagged). However, the official installer from the KeepStreams website contains no malicious code.

Is It Legal?

Many US users are terrified of getting a "Copyright Infringement Notice" from Comcast or AT&T. Of course, I am, too. So I dug into different papers, real cases, and KeepStreams' official explanation of its service (Check KeepStreams Copyright). And here's my thought:

KeepStreams downloads directly from the streaming server (HTTPS). It does NOT use P2P (Peer-to-Peer) networks like BitTorrent.

ISP warnings are triggered by P2P uploads. Since you are not uploading data to anyone else, your ISP just sees you watching a lot of Netflix. They cannot distinguish between you streaming a movie and you downloading it (unless you "browse" 100 titles per day, of course.)

What about the legality?

In most regions (including the US), recording media for personal, offline use (Time-shifting/Space-shifting) is acceptable, and is often protected by Fair Use. But remember, we should never share or sell the files.

Hands-on Performance Test: The Good and The Bad

Enough theory. How does it actually perform when you throw 4K content at it? I tested KeepStreams One on a Windows 11 PC (32GB RAM) and a MacBook Air M2. Check my results.

Cons: Personal Test from Netflix and Prime Video

Most "downloaders" lie. They claim 1080p, but secretly record the screen in 720p. I downloaded Vivant (Netflix) and The Rings of Power (Prime Video) to check the file metadata. Honestly, the speed and stability is quite satisfactory.

• Success Rate: 100% on Windows and Mac.
• Resolution: True 1920x1080p.
• Bitrate: ~5500 kbps (This is comparable to the actual stream quality).
• Audio: EAC3 5.1 Surround Sound verified.

Cons: Where KeepStreams Fails?

But nothing is perfect, so here is bad news.

If you use this software long enough, you will see this error. It usually happens when Netflix or Amazon pushes a silent DRM update. Sometimes, the analysis gets stuck at "analyzing..." or fails instantly.

Why? Streaming services update their DRM keys weekly. When this happens, KeepStreams (and every other downloader like StreamFab) needs 2-5 days to push an update.

During my test, HBO Max failed for 2 days. I contacted support, and they released a patch on Day 3. It's annoying, but it's inevitable for all similar tools.

The "Mac Lag"

As a MacBook user, this one hurts. The Windows version of KeepStreams can always get features and bug fixes first. The macOS version often lags behind by a week or two.

KeepStreams Alternatives

If the "Analysis Failed" warnings scare you (honestly speaking, this is an issue for all video downloaders), or perhaps you want a tool that covers everything in one go. Here are 2 alternatives based on my usage. One is for all-in-one lovers, and the other is for traditional recorder enthusiasts.

AIO Alternative: BBFly

📌 Best For: Users who want "One Tool to Rule Them All" without buying separate modules.

If KeepStreams is the specialist, BBFly is the Swiss Army Knife. I started using BBFly recently because it bundles nearly every downloader module into a single, cohesive interface. What's more, all at one subscription.

It feels more useful for heavy users who download from 100+ different niche sites, not just the big ones. 1080p saving, batch download, auto-download, MP4/MKV output... nearly all the major functions of KeepStreams can be found in BBFly.

However, BBFly has a less frequent update than KeepStreams. It means we need to wait longer (lag for about 1 week) for the next patch if a new DRM issue pops up.

Recorder Alternative: Audials

📌 Best For: Users who want a "Modern DVR Recorder" for Windows PC.

When direct downloading fails (and it occasionally will due to DRM), you need a backup plan. That's when a traditional recorder shines. Audials is NOT a downloader. It plays the movie at 2x or 4x speed in the background and records the screen.

We can't get the perfect 1:1 file copy with Audials, and it takes longer (recording a 2-hour movie takes... well, impossible in 20 minutes anyway). However, when DRM updates, it can still work 90% of the time. It’s my "Emergency Parachute" when KeepStreams is waiting for an update.
