Streaming platforms like Netflix use DRM (digital rights management) to control how movies and shows are played, copied, and stored. Netflix downloads are tied to the Netflix app, not the Netflix website. This is for a content protection reason.
This does not mean your Netflix account is broken or your MacBook is missing a setting. It simply means Netflix has not released an official Mac app with offline downloads. Check the list:

Is there a direct way to download Netflix movies on Mac and get the video files? Yes, and a third-party downloader is just designed for this. I tested about 6 Netflix downloaders, and I'd share one of my best download experiences with KeepStreams for Netflix.

QuickTime Player can record parts of your Mac screen, so it may sound like an easy way to record Netflix on Mac. But in my test, problems kept poping up, including a black screen, missing audio, poor quality, or a recording that fails halfway through.
Here's how to get started:
- Connect your iPhone to your Mac using a USB cable.
- Open QuickTime Player on your Mac.
- Click File at the top of the screen, then choose New Movie Recording.
- Next to the red record button, you'll see a small arrow. Click it and choose iPhone under Microphone and Camera. This tells QuickTime to show your iPhone screen.
- Open Netflix on your iPhone and pick the movie you want to record.
- Hit the record button in QuickTime Player to start recording.
- When the movie ends, click the record button again to stop.
- To save the recorded movie, click File and then Save.
Even when screen recording works, it is not efficient. A two-hour movie takes two hours to record, and you have to keep the screen clean the whole time. A notification, cursor movement, system alert, or unstable connection can ruin the recording.
Without advanced H.265 video codec, the final file may also be much larger than expected and lower in quality than the original stream.
Note: Keep in mind that QuickTime Player is not originally made to record a whole movie. It might work well when capturing a short cut on Netflix. But I'll never recommend it as a professional DVR tool.
Method 4: Use Third-Party Tool to Record Netflix
QuickTime Player might fail to record Netflix shows sometimes, that's why some users like a more professional recorders to handle DRM-protected videos on Netflix and other streaming platforms. These tools include PlayOn and Audials. They work like a DVR, but in a new style.
Most such tools are not free. Also, although you've installed a reliable recorder on your Macbook, you should note that it's still a time-consuming and laborious work.
Some recorders like Audials may offer a multi-speed record mode. But based on my test, it still took me about 30 minutes to record Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Why Is It Not Recommended to Install Windows on Mac?
Installing Windows on a Mac used to sound like a workaround, especially for older Intel-based MacBook models. But in 2026, I would not recommend it as a Netflix offline-viewing solution. There are three reasons.
First, Apple Silicon Macs do not use Boot Camp in the same way older Intel Macs did, so installing Windows is no longer a simple built-in path for many MacBook users. It required more complex settings.
Second, running another operating system just to watch Netflix offline adds complexity, storage use, and potential troubleshooting. It's just not worth it.
Third, Netflix's newer Windows app no longer supports downloads. Although you can still use the official Netflix app on Windows PC, it's impossible to download videos on it. Therefore, even if you install the extra system on a Macbook, you can't download Netflix movies on Mac.
