Can you download Netflix movies on Mac? Netflix works fine in Safari or Chrome on a Mac, but the download button you see on an iPhone, iPad, Android device, or Chromebook does not show up on macOS.
Netflix only lets us stream on a Mac browser. It does not currently offer a macOS app. It means if we want to enjoy Netflix offline viewing on Mac, we need to find a few workarounds. No matter which you choose, using a third-party downloader, mirroring from a mobile device, or recording the screen, each option has limits, and I'll compare them clearly below.
Quick Guide:
- If you only need offline viewing, I'd recommend the official Netflix app on mobile devices. This is the cleanest option. ➡️ Watch Netflix on Mobile
- If you want to watch Netflix on a bigger MacBook screen, try mirroring or AirPlay from another Apple device. ➡️ Section 4
- If you need a local video file on Mac, then a third-party downloader is the only type of method designed for that purpose. ➡️ Section 3
Why Netflix Downloads Do Not Work on Mac?
Streaming platforms like Netflix use DRM (digital rights management) to control how movies and shows are played, copied, and stored. Netflix downloads are tied to the Netflix app, not the Netflix website. This is for a content protection reason.
This does not mean your Netflix account is broken or your MacBook is missing a setting. It simply means Netflix has not released an official Mac app with offline downloads. Check the list:
| Device | Can stream Netflix? | Can download Netflix officially? |
| MacBook / iMac / Mac mini | ✅ (through a browser) | ❌ |
| iPhone / iPad | ✅ | ✅ |
| Android phone / tablet | ✅ | ✅ |
| Amazon Fire tablet | ✅ | ✅ |
| Google Chromebook | ✅ | ✅ |
| Windows laptop | ✅ (through a browser) | ❌ Not available in 2026 |
What About Netflix Download Limits?
Even on devices that support downloads, Netflix offline viewing still has limits:
- Not every title is available for download
- Netflix limits how many downloads we can keep.
- For ad-supported plans, it's 15 downloads
- For ad-free plans, it's up to 100 downloads
- Downloaded videos usually expire after a certain time. Some titles may expire 48 hours after you start watching them, while others stay 30 days, or even shorter, depending on the license.
Method 1: Download Netflix Movies on Mac Directly
Is there a direct way to download Netflix movies on Mac and get the video files? Yes, and a third-party downloader is just designed for this. I tested about 6 Netflix downloaders, and I'd share one of my best download experiences with KeepStreams for Netflix.
What Can KeepStreams for Netflix Do?
As a professional video downloader, KeepStreams is available for both Mac and Windows PC. It says we can download Netflix videos in original quality (up to 1080p video, Atmos, EAC3 5.1, and AAC 2.0 audio) with it. I tested it by downloading 3 episodes from Stranger Things.
When I played the video in KeepStreams, the video was automatically detected, analyzed, and extracted. I ticked 3 episodes together, and the batch download function works smoothly. I haven't tried it, but it's said the auto-download function is also impressive, especially if you love binge-watching.
Because I tried it with my ad-supported Netflix plans, another point I like is the ad-removal function. KeepStream really removed all commercials and delivered a clear video file.
Steps to Download Netflix Movies on Mac
KeepStreams works on an internal browser, so that I can play, download, and manage my Netflix downloads on my MacBook on this single program. Here's how:
Or, just enter the Netflix video URL to the top search bar.
Because KeepStreams downloads Netflix movies as MP4 files on Mac, you can play them anytime, and even on any device. Another reason why I chose KeepStreams as the example is the generous free trial. We can use it to download 3 full Netflix videos in 1080p first to test the functions.
Note: KeepStreams is only made for personal offline viewing purposes. Never share, distribute, or sell the downloads. Respect copyright and comply with the ToS of Netflix.
Method 2: AirPlay Netflix from iPhone or iPad
Although we can't directly download Netflix movies on a Mac via its app, it's possible to download videos on an iPhone or iPad and use AirPlay to watch them on the MacBook. Here's how you can do this.
To begin with, you need to download Netflix movies on your iPhone/iPad by following these steps:
- Make sure you have the Netflix app installed. Open it and log in to your account.
- Tap the Downloads icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Then tap See What You Can Download to see available shows and movies.
- Select a movie or TV show you want to download. For movies, tap the Download button (downward arrow). For TV shows, tap the download button next to each episode.
- Go back to the Downloads section to see your downloaded content. You can watch it anytime without the Internet.
Now, you can use AirPlay to project the screen of your iPhone or iPad to your Mac. To AirPlay Netflix, you'll need to ensure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and that your Mac is set up to receive AirPlay content.
- On macOS 13 or later: Go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff, then turn on "AirPlay Receiver"
- On macOS 12.5 or earlier: Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Sharing, then select and enable "AirPlay Receiver"
- Select "Current user" to allow only devices signed in with your Apple ID
- Choose "Anyone on the same network" or "Everyone" to allow other devices
The Netflix content should now start playing on your Mac screen. To stop AirPlaying, you only need to tap the AirPlay icon in the Netflix app again and select your iPhone or iPad from the list to return playback to your device.
Note: Some Netflix content may have restrictions that prevent AirPlay or screen mirroring due to copyright protections. In such cases, you may need to use the Netflix app directly on your Mac or consider alternative methods for viewing.
Method 3: Use QuickTime Player to Record Netflix on Mac
QuickTime Player can record parts of your Mac screen, so it may sound like an easy way to record Netflix on Mac. But in my test, problems kept poping up, including a black screen, missing audio, poor quality, or a recording that fails halfway through.
Here's how to get started:
- Connect your iPhone to your Mac using a USB cable.
- Open QuickTime Player on your Mac.
- Click File at the top of the screen, then choose New Movie Recording.
- Next to the red record button, you'll see a small arrow. Click it and choose iPhone under Microphone and Camera. This tells QuickTime to show your iPhone screen.
- Open Netflix on your iPhone and pick the movie you want to record.
- Hit the record button in QuickTime Player to start recording.
- When the movie ends, click the record button again to stop.
- To save the recorded movie, click File and then Save.
Even when screen recording works, it is not efficient. A two-hour movie takes two hours to record, and you have to keep the screen clean the whole time. A notification, cursor movement, system alert, or unstable connection can ruin the recording.
Without advanced H.265 video codec, the final file may also be much larger than expected and lower in quality than the original stream.
Note: Keep in mind that QuickTime Player is not originally made to record a whole movie. It might work well when capturing a short cut on Netflix. But I'll never recommend it as a professional DVR tool.
Method 4: Use Third-Party Tool to Record Netflix
QuickTime Player might fail to record Netflix shows sometimes, that's why some users like a more professional recorders to handle DRM-protected videos on Netflix and other streaming platforms. These tools include PlayOn and Audials. They work like a DVR, but in a new style.
Most such tools are not free. Also, although you've installed a reliable recorder on your Macbook, you should note that it's still a time-consuming and laborious work.
Some recorders like Audials may offer a multi-speed record mode. But based on my test, it still took me about 30 minutes to record Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Why Is It Not Recommended to Install Windows on Mac?
Installing Windows on a Mac used to sound like a workaround, especially for older Intel-based MacBook models. But in 2026, I would not recommend it as a Netflix offline-viewing solution. There are three reasons.
First, Apple Silicon Macs do not use Boot Camp in the same way older Intel Macs did, so installing Windows is no longer a simple built-in path for many MacBook users. It required more complex settings.
Second, running another operating system just to watch Netflix offline adds complexity, storage use, and potential troubleshooting. It's just not worth it.
Third, Netflix's newer Windows app no longer supports downloads. Although you can still use the official Netflix app on Windows PC, it's impossible to download videos on it. Therefore, even if you install the extra system on a Macbook, you can't download Netflix movies on Mac.
FAQs

A4. Yes, of course. Based on my applies a strict privacy policy, purchase policy, and money-back guarantee policy. It promises that the personal info will never be used for any other purpose than downloading videos.

But with a third-party downloader, we can directly get Netflix video files on Mac easily. With the MP4 files, we can even transfer the Netflix downloads to USB and carry the library.
If you only want offline viewing, I still recommend using a mobile device to download Netflix videos or screencast the downloaded videos from Netflix app to your Mac. It's always the cleanest and safest way.
